Tips for Kinky Curly Hair (4c)

Curly Hair Type Chart

By Kiara Carmon – Tampa, FL

As natural hair care grows in the beauty industry, there are misconceptions about how kinky curly hair types are identified. All hair that is dry and thick is NOT 4c hair! All hair that shrinks when wet is NOT 4c hair! 4c hair consists of extremely tightly coiled strands and it is very possible for this type of hair to have defined, moisturized, and shiny curls. (Please see the chart of curly hair types above).

Your crown is beautiful sis, embrace it!

YOU does not “need” a chemical unless that is something that you want for yourself. At the end of the day, natural hair is what you make it. Kinky curly hair is so unique and can be styled in many way and society should never dictate whether or not your curls need to be altered.

Is your curly hair extremely dry and not performing its best? You most likely need more moisture or your ends need a trim.

Be sure to incorporate a deep conditioner with every wash or every other wash. I love using aloe vera straight from the plant along with water. Some of my favorite oils are grape seed, jojoba, and olive oil. Also, moisturize your curly hair during protective styles, this is when our hair is typically the driest. Incorporating protein in your curly hair regimen (at least every 6 weeks) or to your overall diet will also help change your hair’s health. It will also give you much better results on wash day!

I know we love our hang time… but those curly hair split ends cannot stay forever if you want to achieve real results!

You are only hurting yourself and the health of your hair by hanging onto them. The longer you go without a trim, the higher the split ends will travel. Our ends break everyday, especially with the manipulation that comes with styling and everyday wear and tear from our hair touching our clothes throughout the day. This is why it is imperative to get a trim every 3 months. If your hair breaks often, it is safe to get a trim every 1-2 months to minimize breakage and retain length!

Greetings! I am Kiara Carmon, MBA, a recent graduate of Florida A&M University. Since I began my transitioning journey to natural at the age of 15, my love for natural hair and the community has immensely grown. Along this journey, I learned that there is a poor understanding of what it takes to properly style and treat natural hair of all textures because stylists do not actively seek education. I have unfortunately been seated and treated by stylists as such. It is now my mission and passion to spread awareness on the troubles the natural hair community faces and instill trust between clients and stylists in the community, starting with arKadia. I promise to utilize my skills acquired from my passion to solve the problem our community faces, be accessible to my clients, and continuously improve for I believe there is always room for improvement. See my work on ENVY.
