There’s nothing worse than an awkward silence during an appointment. To avoid the dreaded long pause, we asked four ENVY artists for their go-to icebreakers when seeing new clients. These conversation starters can even help you understand their overall beauty goals.
“I love asking my clients… ‘So, how is your skincare routine at home?’ Don’t get me wrong, sometimes I get crazy answers, but it helps me get to know my clients and what will work best for them. For example, it can give me an insight on if they are a two step and done or twenty in-depth steps! You would be surprised what one question can answer!”
– Cari Whitesell, cosmetic, brow & lash artist in Burlington, NC
“One of the best ways to connect with a new client is to discuss their goals – beyond just how it looks. Ask them what their daily care routine is like and how often they tend to make it into the salon. Give them an opportunity to tell you what they do and don’t like about their current hair so you can improve upon that. Many people have a challenging time expressing what they want but yet they do have something in mind. Being professionals, it’s our job to ask all the right questions needed to customize their service and reach their goals.”
– Christine Frank, hairstylist in Spring, TX
“During a consultation, I’ll first ask my client what look they’re going for. Then I’ll ask, especially if they’re unsure, ‘What is your favorite feature on your face?’ We will make that our focus feature! Be in love with being you!”
– Stephanie Wilson, cosmetologist, esthetician, and MUA in Nashville, TN
“I ask how they heard of my business and is this your first facial (or set of lashes)?’ After that, we have small talk and I take it from there. It’s important to know how folks hear about you and to know if they’re new to spa services or lashes because you want to control expectations so you can provide the best service possible.”
– Carina Brooks King, esthetician, nail tech, and lash artist in Longwood, FL
